Well grates, also known as rainwater grates or water grates, are a type of facility in urban drainage systems. They are usually installed on both sides of roads, the edges of sidewalks, squares or other areas prone to water accumulation on the ground, covering above the sewer entrances.

Function

Drainage function: Its surface is designed with dense gaps or grid-like openings, allowing rainwater to quickly flow into underground drainage pipes, preventing water accumulation on the road surface, and effectively reducing the risk of urban flooding during heavy rain.

Filtration and interception: The grid of the grate can prevent large particles such as leaves, garbage and stones from entering the sewer, preventing the drainage pipe from being blocked and thus reducing the subsequent silt removal and maintenance costs.

Safety protection: It covers the sewer opening to prevent pedestrians, small animals or small vehicles (such as bicycles) from accidentally falling in, and at the same time avoids the manhole cover being directly exposed, reducing safety hazards.

Protective structure: When vehicles and pedestrians pass by, the grate can disperse the pressure, reduce the direct impact on the well opening of the drainage pipe below, and help extend the service life of the drainage facilities.

Beautifying the environment: Some manhole grates are exquisitely designed with patterns on their surfaces and adjustable bright colors, which can blend in with the surrounding environment and play a role in beautifying the city.
